Portraits of Gaza
“In this series of portraits, I want to respectfully and lovingly pay tribute to the victims of the genocide in Gaza, and greater Palestine. Part of the mentality necessary to commit genocide is to dehumanize people. I hold each one of these individuals in the highest regard, and invite you to see them and every Palestinian in the same light.”
About
Portraits of Gaza is a self-published zine, written and illustrated by Adrienne Simms. It tells the stories of 8 people whose lives and deaths were shaped by the Israeli occupation of Palestine, and the ongoing genocide in Gaza.
The stylistic inspiration for the paintings was taken from ancient Roman-Egyptian funerary portraits, which were placed in the wrappings of mummies. The subjects of these portraits often wore a laurel leaf crown to symbolize their victory over death.
